obedience: situational variables ao1 Flashcards
Name the 3 situational variables
Location
Proximity
Uniform
Where did milgram do his initial obedience experiment
Yale university
In the location variation where did milgram move his expiriment too
Run down office block
In the location variation how did obedience rates change
65% to 47.5%
Explain why obedience rates dropped from 65% to 47.5% in location variation
A prestigious university gives the study legitimacy and authority in eyes of pots
The expirmeneter then share this legitimacy. A run down office block doesn’t
However since obedience rates were still relatively high it could be argued ppts were aware of scientific nature of procedure along with the researcher as an authority figure being present.
Describe proximity in milgrams baseline study
Teacher could hear the learner but couldn’t see them
How did milgram change proximity in the variation
In proximity variation the teacher and learner were in the same room
Obedience dropped from 65% to 40%
Describe touch proximity
If learner got a question wrong they would have to place their hand on the shock plate
If the learner refused the teacher would have to force their hand
obedience rate in touch proximity variation
Obedience levels dropped to 30%
Describe remote instruction variation
Experimenter left the room and gave the instructions to teacher via telephone
How did obedience rates change in remote instruction variation
Obedience dropped to 20.5%
Explain the change in obedience rates in all 3 proximity variations
Decreased proximity allows people to psychologically distance themselves from the consequences of their actions
Eg: in proximity variation they were in diff rooms teacher was less aware of the harm they were causing snd was more obedient
In remote instruction variation authority of expirimenter becomes less apparent because he’s further away
Describe uniform in the baseline study
Expirimenter wore a white lab coat 🥼
- symbol of authority
Describe uniform in variation
Expirimenter called away and replaced by another “ppt” in normal everyday clothes pretending to be an ordinary member of the public but they were a confederate
How did obedience rates change in uniform variation
Dropped to 20%
Lowest obedience rates out of all variations
