Q

Outline interference theory as an explanation of forgetting (6)

A

This occurs when 2 pieces of information conflict with each other within a memory, resulting in an inability to access one or both of them. There are 2 types of interference - proactive where old information disrupts the recall of new information. For example, a teacher calling a new student by an old students name. Retroactive interference is where new information disrupts recall of old information. For instance, a teacher forgetting names of old students when new student arrives. Interference is especially prevalent when 2 pieces of info are similar. This was shown in research by Mc Geoch and Mcdonald who gave participants list of words to learn followed by 1 of 6 new lists of words. The second list was either synonyms, antonyms, unrelated adjectives, consonant syllables or no list or numbers. The group who had synonyms had worst recall when asked to recall the original list justifying that interference is made worse when 2 pieces of information is similar.

Q

procedure of mcgoeach and mc donald

A

studied retroactive interfernece by changing amount of similarity bet 2 sets of material
gave ptts list of words to lesrn till 100% accuracy followed by 1 of 6 new lists of owrds. Seconf lsit was either synonyms, antonyms, unrelated adjectices, consonant syllables or no list or numbers. Group who had synonyms had worst recakk wehn asjed ro recall og list justfyinh that interfenrce is made worse when 2 perices of info is similar

Q

explanation for effects of similiarity

A

it could be due to proactive interferene - old info affects new info recall
or retroacctive - new info makes older memories harder to remember
