What is ADHD/ADD characterized by?
- Short-attention
- Learning problems
What do you see with ADHD?
- they are hyperactive-impulsive
- Difficulty with other children
- Act out
- Very impulsive, can’t focus
What do you see with ADD?
- Predominantly inattentive
- Less likely to act out
- May sit still, but don’t pay attention
What stimulant drugs do you use to treat ADHD/ADD?
- Amphetamines (Adderall)
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin)
What is a non-stimulant (minor stimulant) drug used to treat ADHD/ADD
-Modafinil (Provigil)
What is the mechanisms of modafinil?
-Blocks uptake of NE and DA
What is the mechanism of Adderall and Ritalin?
-Releasers of NE and DA but Ritalin has properties of both (blocks uptake as well)
What is the name of Mild autism?
-Asperger’s disorder
What are the features of autism?
- Problems with social interaction, verbal or non verbal communication
- They do repetitive behavior
What is the cause of autism?
- Genetic
- Environment
Autism tends to associate with certain medical conditions such as what?
-Fragile X syndrome
-Congenital rubella syndrome
-Untreated phenylketonuria
(These are major stress medical conditions)
What drugs can you use to treat autism?
- Atypical antipsychotics
- SSRIs
Besides drugs what can you do to treat autism?
- Behavioral interventions
- Focus on the social skills, language, communication, play skills, daily living and motor skills
What are the symptoms of Anorexia?
- extreme restriction of eating
- Osteoporosis
- Dry yellow skin
- Muscle wasting
- Damage to heart
- Infertility
- Use drugs such as laxatives and diuretics
What are the symptoms of bulimia?
- Frequent bingeing and purging
- Usually normal weight
- Damage to esophagus
