-All nucleated hematopoietic cells except red blood cells
What is a normal WBC?
3500-10000 cells/microliter
What is a normal neutrophil count?
-1800-6700 (55%)
What is a normal eosinophil count?
0-570 (3%)
What is a normal lymphocyte count?
1400-3900 (35%)
What is leukocytosis?
WBC greater than 10,000
What are the causes of leukocytosis?
- Chronic infection or inflammation
- Exercise
- Some leukemias
What can relative polycythemias due to decrease plasma volume be called?
-Gaisbock Syndrome (# of RBCs stay the same)
What is polycythemia vera?
-Primary polycythemia is genetic and due to increased RBCs
What is Microcytic anemia?
Less than 80 fluid ounce (measure of cell size/volume)
What are some examples of Microcytic anemia?
- Iron deficiency
- Lead poisoning
What are the causes of iron deficiency?
- Blood loss
- Poor diet
- Hemorrhaging
What is macrocytic anemia?
-Larger than 100 fluid ounce
What causes Macrocytic anemia?
- Liver disease
- Drugs
- Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
What do you see with vitamin B12 or folate deficiency?
- Paresthesia
- Weakness
- Dementia
- Pernicious anemia
