-Has Little effect

-Benzodiazepines
What are the therapeutic action of Benzodiazepines?
- Anxiolytics
- Treat seizures
- Alcohol withdrawal
- Insomnia (hypnotic short acting)
- Muscle relaxation
- Often used a couple hours before surgical dental procedures
What are the adverse effects of Benzodiazepines?
- Tolerance
- Can cause addiction and withdrawal
- Interacts synergistically with other depressants
- Drowsiness
- Motor impairment
- Don’t use in a pt with major depression
- Decrease cognition
What are the two sedative benzodiazepines?
- Diazepam (Valium)
- Alprazolam (Xanax)
