distribution and impact of caries/perio disease :) Flashcards
how do we deicide which oral conditions are of public health importance
- Is the condition common or if it is rare how severe is it?
- What impact does it have on individuals?
- What impact does it have on society?
- Is the condition preventable or are effective treatments available?
epidemiology
- Study of the distribution and determinants of disease
* Population and not the individual is the unit of interest
provenance
- % of a population that have the disease in question now, divided by the population at risk
indidence
- No. of new cases of a disease divided by the population at risk in a given time period
distribution in the population
• Differences between age groups, genders, socio-economic status
properties of an ideal index to measure disease
- Clear, quick and simple to use
- Acceptable
- Specific - well defined criteria
- Reliable
- Objective (not susceptible to examiner opinion)
- Consistent and repeatable
- Sensitive (detecting small changes)
- Capable of giving data suitable for statistical analysis
attrition
Loss of tooth substance as a result of tooth to tooth contact
abrasion
- Pathological wear of tooth substance by a foreign object independent of occlusion
erosion
- Loss of dental hard tissue by a chemical process which does not involve bacteria
attrition showing
- Flattend off teeth
- Can see dentine on mandibualrteeth
- Occurs gradually
- Increases sensitivty
abrasion showing
- Abrasion cavity
- Vigorous teeth brushing or too often
- Will wear away the gum
- Exposes some of the dentine
risk factors for non carious tooth loss
host factros - e.g. salia flow tooth factors - acid resistance -pellicle protection diet - acidic beverages medication
impact of non across tooth loss
If severe, potential for impact on: • dental appearance • dentine sensitivity • chewing and eating ability Potentially, if severe: • Missing from work or school of • Patient • Carer • Costs of treatment
orla cancer
A malignant tumour arising from structures in the mouth
Presents as red/white patch, ulcer or lump
head and neck cancer
• carcinomas of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx as well as other tumors that affect the head and neck
