7.2 Physiology of the Urinary System Part 6 Flashcards
What nerves control the cardiovascular baroreceptors?
vagus
glossopharyngeal
What type of receptors are the baroreceptors?
mechanoreceptors
What do the cardiovascular baroreceptors detect?
stretch in the vessels
If blood pressure and blood volume rise what do the baroreceptors do?
inhibit sympathetic nervous system signals to the kidneys thus dilating the afferent arterioles
What is the result of the baroreceptors inhibiting the sympathetic nervous system signals to the kidneys?
increase in filtration rate which increases water and sodium output which reduces blood volume and normalizes pressure
What does normal urine look like?
clear and pale to deep yellow depending on hydration
What causes the yellow color of urine?
urochrome
What is urochrome?
principal pigment in urine that is derived from the metabolic breakdown of hemoglobin
What causes cloudy urine?
pus
What does cloudy urine indicate?
UTI
Why does diabetes cause a sweet smelling urine?
acetone
What is the normal range of urine pH?
4.5-8
What does a diet high in fruits and veggies cause for pH in urine? Diet high in protein?
veggies = higher pH
protein = lower pH
What is the density of urine as compared to water and why?
higher density due to presence of solutes
What is the general composition of urine?
95% water and 5% solutes
