5.2 Physiology of the Lymphatic System and Immunology Part 2 Flashcards
What are the two main groups of cytokines involved in immunity?
interferons
interleukins
What cells produce cytokines in the immune response?
macrophags
T cells
B cells
fibroblasts
What is the function of interferons?
inhibit viral replication and assist in activating natural killer cells
What is the function of interleukins?
function as chemical activators sending signals throughout the body to increase the immune response
What are pyrogens?
a type of interleukin that reset the bodys thermostat in the hypothalamus
What is the purpose of the pyrogens resetting the bodys thermostat?
to produce a fever
What is the purpose of fevers?
help the body fight infections by interfering with the growth and replication of pathogens
What do fevers cause within the cells?
lysosomes to breakdown
What is the purpose of fevers causing lysosomes to breakdown?
lysosomes will release lyse that will destroy a cell infected by a virus
What can fevers promote the activity of?
white blood cells
What are white blood cells also known as?
leukocytes
What are the two major categories of white blood cells?
granulocytes
agranulocytes
What are granulocytes?
have granules in the cytoplasm
What are the granulocytes?
neutrophils
eosinophils
basophils
What are all granulocytes capable of?
phagocytosis
