2.2 The Spinal Cord Part 2 Flashcards
What do the ascending tracts of the spinal cord carry?
carry sensory inputs to the brain
What do the descending tracts of the spinal cord carry?
motor outputs down the spinal cord
What does the dorsal root of the spinal nerve carry?
incoming afferent neurons
What does the dorsal root ganglion carry?
cell bodies of incoming afferent neurons
What does the ventral root contain?
axons of motor neurons
What does a spinal nerve consist of?
dorssal and ventral roots
What is the gray matter of the spinal cord composed of?
mixture of cell bodies of neurons organized into regions called horns
How many horns are in the gray matter of the spinal cord?
two posterior/dorsal horns
two anterior/ventral horns
What connects the anterior horns of the gray matter?
gray commissure
What do the anterior/ventral horns contain?
somatic motor neurons whose axons serve as efferent pathways to skeletalmuscles by way of ventral roots of the spinal cord
What do the posterior/dorsal horns contain?
sensory neurons that serve as afferent pathways from receptors by way of dorsal roots of the spinal cord
Where are the two lateral horns of the gray matter located?
primarily at the thoracic level of the spinal cord
What do the lateral horns of the gray matter contain?
autonomic sympatetic motor neurons who axons serves as efferent pathways to visceral organs
Where do the efferent pathways of lateral horns exit the spinal cord?
ventral roots
