7.1 Anatomy of the Urinary System Part 5 Flashcards
What is the function of the glomerular capsule?
filters the blood
What is the function of the renal tubule?
reabsorbs needed materials
What is the function of the collecting ducts?
carry the remaining material away as urine
What are the parts of the renal tubule?
proximal convoluted tubule
loop of henle
distal convoluted tubule
What is the renal corpuscle composed of?
glomerulus
Bowmans capsule
What is the glomerulus?
network of tiny blood capillaries
What is Bowmans capsule?
double walled simple squamous epithelial cup
What are fenestrations?
pores
What do the fenestrations of the glomerular capillaries allow?
certain substances to leave the capillaries
What is unique about the glomerular capillaries?
lie between two arterioles instead of a vein and arteriole
What does the different in diameter of the afferent and efferent arteriole cause?
causes a high blood pressure in the glomerular capillaries forcing water and solutes out of the blood allowing for filtration
Which has a bigger diameter, afferent or efferent arterioles?
afferent is larger
What happens to the water and solutes that leave the glomerulus?
glomerulus - glomerular capsule - renal tubule
What is the filtrate?
water and solutes that have left the blood and entered the glomerular capsule
What are cortical nephrons?
located in the cortex region of the kidney except for a portion of the loop of henle which extends into the medulla
