week 5
What is neurulation?
formation of the neural tube from the outer folds of the ectoderm
What is the first step of neurulation?
lateral sides of the ectoderm converge together to form the epidermis superficially
What is the second step of neurulation?
neural folds form underneath the epidermis forming the neural crest
What occurs during the third step of neurulation?
neural plate becomes the neural groove which becomes the neural tube
What does the anterior portion of the neural tube become?
brain
What is spina bifida?
when neuralation does not completely close the neural tube
What are symptoms of spina bifida?
varying levels of sensory/motor disabilities
What can pregnant mothers take in order to help prevent neural tube defects?
folic acid
