What results from damage to the ventral root or anterior horn cells?
paralysis of the associated skeletal muscles
What happens to muscles overtime from paraylsis?
they begin to atrophy
What is a complete spinal cord injury?
occurs when the spinal cord is completely severed at any level
What occurs from a complete spinal cord injury?
motor and sensory loss in body regions below the site of the damage
What is paraplegia?
lower limb paralysis
When can paraplegia occur?
spinal cord is injured between T1 and L1
What is quadriplegia?
paralysis of all four limbs
When can quadriplegia occur?
spinal cord is injured in the cervical region
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel
What can occur if the ulnar nerve is damaged?
claw hand/ulnar claw
What is claw hand?
inability to open the forth and fifth fingers caused by flexion at the IP joints and hyperextension of the MCP joints in digits 4 and 5
What is sciatica?
increased pressure on the sciatic nerve
What results from sciatica?
pain in the lower pelvis and posterior thigh
