6.2 Male Reproductive System Part 4 Flashcards
What do the seminal vesicles secrete?
thick viscous fluid containing nutrients (fructose, vitamin C, and prostaglandins) for the sperm
Where is the prostate gland located?
just below the bladder
What does the prostate gland secrete?
milky aklaline fluid that helps to increase the motility of the sperm
What can an enlarged prostate gland cause?
constrict the urethra causing slow or difficult urination
Where are the bulbourethral glands located?
below the prostate gland on either side of the urethra
What do the bulbourethral glands secrete?
alkaline fluid which is the first to be released during ejaculation
What is the purpose of the secretion from the bulbourethral glands?
to clear and neutralize the acidity of the urine in the urethra
What are the main functions of the male reproductive system?
produce sperm
produce testosterone
What is spermatogenesis?
production of sperm
How long can spermatogenesis take?
64-72 days
When does a male begin to make sperm?
at the onset of puberty
What are sperm formed from?
spermatgonia
Where are spermatogonia located?
seminiferous tubules in the testes
What are spermatogonia?
stem cells that go through mitotic divisions beginning at birth until puberty
What does the anterior pituity gland start secreting once males hit puberty?
FSh = follicle stimulating hormone
What is the function of FSH in males?
cause spermatogonia to undergo cell divsion producing one stem cell and on primary spermatocyte
What type of division does the stem cell and the primary spermocyte undergo?
stem cell = mitosis
primary spermatocyte = meiosis
What are the meiotic products of the primary spermatocyte known as?
spermatids
How many spermatids are produced from one spermatocyte?
four
What do the spermatids need to undergo to become mature sperm?
spermiogenesis
