2.4 Spinal Nerves Part 2 Flashcards
What is the general pathway of information to and from the spinal cord?
sensory receptor - sensory spinal nerve - dorsal root - spinal cord - brain - spinal cord - ventral root - motor spinal nerve - effector
What is a dermatome?
region of skin that carries sensory information through a specific pair of spinal nerves to the spinal cord and up to the brain
What is the cervical plexus?
combination of the ventral rami of spinal nerves C1-C5
What is the most important nerve of the cervical plexus?
phrenic nerve
What would severing the phrenic nerve cause?
Paralysis of the diaphragm
What does irritation of the phrenic nerve cause?
Hiccups
What does paralysis mean?
Motor loss of function
What would be needed if the diaphragm is paralyzed?
Ventilator
What is a ventilator?
Mechanical respirator
What does the phrenic nerve arise from?
Ventral rami of C3-C5
