1.1 Nervous System: Introduction Flashcards
What is the study of anatomy?
structure of the body
What is the study of physiology?
function of the body
What does the physiology of the body depend on?
anatomy
What is the nervous systems function?
to receive information, process information, and send signals to muscles and glands to elicit a response
What is nervous tissue responsible for?
communication between cells of the body by forming a system of electrical impulses
What are the two main divisions of the human nervous system?
central nervous system
peripheral nervous system
What does the CNS include?
brain
spinal cord
What is the purpose of the skull?
to protect the brain
What is the purpose of the vertebrae?
protect the spinal cord
What is the CNS able to do?
send and receive signals or impulses to the peripheral nervous sytem
What are nuclei in regards to the CNS?
collections of cell bodies inside of the CNA
What are tracts in regards to the CNS?
collection of nerve axons in the CNS
What encompasses the peripheral nervous system?
all nerves not in the brain or spinal cord
What are the two subset of nerves that are in the PNS?
cranial and spinal nerves
What makes up the brain stem?
midbrain
pons
medulla
