4.3 Physiology of the Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What controls blood flow through the heart?
four valves
What is the very general blood flow in the heart?
vessels - atria - ventricles - body
Why is the heart considered a double pump?
contains two circuits: pulmonary circuit and systemic circuit
What is the right circuit of the heart?
pulmonary circuit
What does the pulmonary circuit do?
sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated
What is the left circuit of the heart?
systemic circuit
What does the systemic circuit do?
sends oxygenated blood from the heart to the cells of the body
What returns deoxygenated blood to the heart?
inferior and superior vena cava
Where do the inferior and superior vena cava return deoxygenated blood to?
right atrium
Where does blood flow from the right atrium?
right ventricle
What is the valve between the right atrium and the right ventricle?
tricuspid valve
Where does blood flow from the right ventricle?
through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary arteries to the lungs
What are the only arteries that carry deoxygenated blood?
pulmonary arteries
How does blood travel from the lungs back to the heart?
pulmonary veins into the left atrium
What is the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle?
mitral valve/bicuspid valve
