5. GI infections-2 Flashcards
A 22 year old college student does a study abroad in Peru. While there she enjoys experience the new culture and eats all the local food and drinks that she can try.. Three months after her arrival she has begun feel nauseous, with loss of appetite and diarrhea. She goes to the doctor and where they run a CBC take a stool sample in which they find Clonorchis sinensis. What could chronic infection of this organism cause?
A. Adenocarcinoma of the bile duct B. Squamous cell carcinoma of the liver C. Adenocarcinoma of the rectum D.Small cell carcinoma of the appendix E. Squamous cell carcinoma of the small bowel
RFA
Ans. A. Adenocarcinoma of the bile duct
Racheal a 21 year college student is on has recently been complaining of abdominal pain and fatigue. She is physically active, eat a diet mostly of diet coke and salad, is sexually active with multiple partner without protection, drinks frequently on the weekends and doesn’t smoke. She goes to a doctor causes she can’t seem to feel normal who runs a CBC and serology. The serology results are HBsAg negative, Anti- HBc negative, anti-HBsAg positive , negative for IgM anti-HBc. How would you classify this patient?
A. Susceptible B. Immune due to natural infection C. Immune due to vaccine D. Acutely infected E.Chronically infected
RFA
Ans. C Immune due to vaccine- Rachel abdominal must be do to something other than HEP B infection
The only serum she is positive for is Anti-HBsAg which is the same as HBs, if you have HBs you are immune.
HBsAG- means active infection find in acute or chronic infections
Anti- HBc- means had the infections now or some time will find in acute chronic and naturally immune patients
IgM anti-HBc- is only found in acute infections
A 35 year old female presents with nausea, vomiting, pale stools, dark urine, and fever. She is a frequent user of SGU Confessions and uses it to have sexual relations with a lot of other male students with no condom use. Serology reveals presence of HBsAg, HBeAg, and Anti-HBc IgM. Which of the following proteins contains reverse transcriptase and RNase H activity in her condition? (MG)
A. ORF P
B. ORF S
C. ORF C
D. ORF X
A. ORF P
This is the viral polymerase protein which functions as DNA polymerase, reverse transcriptase, and RNase H.
Dx is HBV
All other options are HBV proteins. This is from the blue chart on slide 7.
A 22 year old male presents with vomiting, nausea, fever, and pale stools. Virology shows the replication of a negative sense RNA genome that involves host cell RNA polymerase II and III. What is the dx? (MG)
A. HAV B. HBV C. HCV D. HDV E. HEV
D. HDV
