2.6 (+ Last three of "Week 2") Flashcards
1
Q
Why might muscle cells need gap junctions?
A
- They need to contract in a coordinated manner; this depend on the exchange of ions.
2
Q
Where is autocrine signalling seen?
A
- Cancer cell development
- Cell destruction (when cell is infected by virus)
3
Q
[talk about desmosomes, adherens junctions, hemidesmosomes, gap junctions]
A
4
Q
What are neurohormones?
A
Neurotransmitters that can enter the blood
5
Q
What are tight junctions?
A
Transmembrane proteins that fuse cells together through their plasma membranes.
6
Q
What are adherens junctions?
A
- Structures that consist of plaque.
- Thick transmembrane glycoproteins attached to actin within the cytoskeleton
7
Q
What are desmosomes?
A
- Consists of plaque
- Thick glycoproteins that attach to keratin within the cytoskeleton
8
Q
What are hemidesmosomes?
A
- Like half a desmosome
- Attach to keratin and laminin in the basement membrane
- Increases stability (for cells that have to endure stress)
9
Q
What are gap junctions?
A
- Made of six connexins that form a connexon. Creates channel between cells
