Purpose of the Upper GI or Barium Swallow
A
Diagnosis of structural abnormalities of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenal bulb

What does the Upper GI or Barium Swallow do?
A
Examines the stomach by x-ray study with fluroscopy with contrast medium

Pre- Procedure
A
- Explain that the patient will need to drink a contrast medium, once that is complete the patient will need to assume different positions on the x-ray table
- Patient will be NPO 8-12 hours
- Avoid smoking after midnight prior to exam
- Do not chew gum while NPO

Post-Procedure
A
- Take measures to prevent contrast medium impaction
- Teaching client that stool may be white for up to 72 hours post test
