Hearing Terms Flashcards
Cochlear Implant
The trend is toward early use, usually 18 months of age, to give the child maximum opportunity to develop listening, language, and speaking skills. Used as a hearing device for profoundly deaf. The implant is intended for the client whose sensorineural hearing loss is either congenital or acquired
Myringotomy
Incision in the tympanum to release the increased pressure and exudates from the middle ear
Otosclerosis
Autosomal dominant disease where there is a fixation of the footplate of the stapes in the oval window. Common cause of conductive hearing loss in young adults.
Stapedectomy
Surgical treatment for otosclerosis and is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation
Conductive Hearing Loss
Occurs in the outer and middle ear and impairs the sound being conducted from the outer to inner ear. Causes include otitis media with effustion, impacted cerumen and foregin bodies, middle ear disease, otosclerosis and stenosis of external auditory canals
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Caused by impairment of function of the inner ear or its central connections. Also called perceptive or nerve deafness. Cogenital and hereditary factors, noise trauma, prebycusis (aging), meiere’s disease, and ototoxicity can cause this type of hearing loss
