aledronate (fosamax)

A

Prevents bone resorption

  1. Give 30 mins prior to medication, food, or beverage in the morning
  2. Administer with 8 oz of water
  3. Avoid laying down 30 minutes after administration
  4. Available as a once daily or once weekly tab
  5. Decreases GI-SE and Increase absorption

calcitonin (Miacalcin

A

Opposes the effects of the parathyroid hormone on bone resorption

  1. Administer intranasally 1 spray every day and alternate nares
  2. Allergy testing is done prior to initiating therapy
  3. Nasal exams for irritation
  4. Common SE include nasal dryness and irriation

lbandronate (Boniva)

A

Reduces bone resorption. In post menopausal women, it reduces the rate of bone turnover, resulting in a net gain in bone mass.

  • Correct hypocalcemia before administering
  • Give on empty stomach
  • Instruct patient to swallow medication whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing in an upright position
  • Keep patient sitting up or ambulating for 60 minutes after taking medication
  • Administered one dose monthly
