A
Prevents bone resorption
- Give 30 mins prior to medication, food, or beverage in the morning
- Administer with 8 oz of water
- Avoid laying down 30 minutes after administration
- Available as a once daily or once weekly tab
- Decreases GI-SE and Increase absorption

calcitonin (Miacalcin
A
Opposes the effects of the parathyroid hormone on bone resorption
- Administer intranasally 1 spray every day and alternate nares
- Allergy testing is done prior to initiating therapy
- Nasal exams for irritation
- Common SE include nasal dryness and irriation

lbandronate (Boniva)
A
Reduces bone resorption. In post menopausal women, it reduces the rate of bone turnover, resulting in a net gain in bone mass.
- Correct hypocalcemia before administering
- Give on empty stomach
- Instruct patient to swallow medication whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing in an upright position
- Keep patient sitting up or ambulating for 60 minutes after taking medication
- Administered one dose monthly
