Purpose of Upper GI Endoscopy
A
Directly visualize the mucosal lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum with the use of a flexible fiberoptic endoscope

Pre-Procedure
A
- NPO 8 hours
- Signed consent
- Explain that a local anesthetic may be sprayed on the throat prior to start
- Explain that the client will be sedated during the producedure

Post-Procedure
A
- Keep client NPO until gag reflex returns (tickle back of throat to test)
- Use warm saline gargle for relief of sore throat
- Monitor temperature every 15-30 minutes for 1-2 hours (spike in temp indicates perforation)
