Is a chronic, digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. The acid irritates the lining of the esophagus causing signs and symptoms of GERD

Prevention of GERD
A
- Eat high protein, low fat
- Eat small frequent meals
- Sleep with HOB elevated
- Lose weight if overweight
- Do not lie down for 2-3 hours after eating
- Do not wear tight clothing around the waist
- Do not bend over after eating
- Avoid alcohol, smoking, caffeine

A
- Nissen Fundoplication, involves 360 degree wrapping of fundus of stomach around the distal esophagus
- Post op prevention of resp. complications
- Maintain F+E balance
- Prevent infection
