Common causes of peritonitis
A
- Ruptured appendix
- Perforated ulcer
- Postoperative rupture of breakage of anastomosis in abdominal/pelvic cavity
- Perforation from endoscopic procedures
- Penetrating trauma to abdomen

Assessment of Peritonitis
A
- Abdominal pain
- Rebound tenderness
- Muscular rigidity
- Spasms
- Shallow respirations due to pain
- Abdominal distention
- Fever
- N/V
- Tachpnea, tachycardia

Diagnostic Testing Peritonitis
A
- Abdominal x-ray
- CBC to look for elevated WBC
- Aspiration of peritoneal fluid

A
- Postoperative and post endoscopic procedure vital signs and abdominal assessment
- Pain assessment
- Maintain patent IV line and administer orderered antibiotics
- Drain care and management
- NPO and main need NG
- Accurate I/O and Monitoring of electrolytes

Nursing Diagnosis Peritonitis
A
- Acute pain r/t inflammation of the peritoneum and abdominal distention
- Risk for deficient fluid volume r/t fluid shifts into the peritoneal cavity
- Imbalanced nutrition: less than body requirements r/t anorexia, nausea and vomiting
