Uses
A
- Short term treatment of active duodenal ulcers and benign gastric ulcers
- used in management of GERD
- used in management of gastric hypersecretory states
- OTC doses: treatment of heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach

Action
A
Inhibits the action of histamine at the H2 receptor site located primarily in gastric parietal cells, resulting in inhibition of the gastric acid secretion

Side/Adverse effects
A
thrombocytopenia, headache, dizziness, constipation, dysrhythmias

Nursing Implications
A
- Avoid administration of antacids within 30 minutes to 1 hour of giving famotidine
- PO doses administered with meals or immediately afterward and at bedtime
- Advise patient to avoid alcohol, products containing asa, ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen and foods that may cause an increase in GI irritation
- Advise patient to report to MD black tarry stools, bleeding, bruising, fatigue, malaise since blood dyscraias can occur
- Avoid tasks that require alertness as dizziness may occur
