Acute Pain r/t Surgical Manipulation of Ear Tissue TNI’s

Answer 2

• Teach the client to report excessive ear pain immediately
• Administer and teach client to use analgesics as ordered
• Encourage client to avoid sudden movements
• Do not position client on operative side

Question 3

Knowledge Deficient: Perioperative care r/t no previous experience TNI’s

Answer 3

• Activity:
  
  • Do not blow nose or cough to sneeze with mouth open to prevent fluctuation of air pressure in the middle ear
  • Avoid drinking through a straw for 2-3 weeks
  • No air travel until allowed by surgeon
  • Use measures to prevent constipation such as adequate fluid and fiber
  • Do not shampoo hair or shower until allowed by surgeon
  • Do not swim or dive until allowed by surgeon
• Signs and Symptoms to Report:
  
  • Chills or fever greater than 100F or 38C
  • Worsening ear pain or discomfort
  • Unusual bleeding or drainage from operative site
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Lack of appetite
  • Persistent postoperative headache
  • Decreased Hearing
  • Dizziness

May be used to insert an ossicular prosthesis and a tympanic membrane graft in patients with chronic otitis media
