- Assess:
- Decreased Hearing
- Lack of awareness of environmental warning sounds
- Dizziness
- Teach:
- Change positions slowly
- Keep eyes straight ahead and move body and head as a unit

Acute Pain r/t Surgical Manipulation of Ear Tissue TNI’s
A
- Teach the client to report excessive ear pain immediately
- Administer and teach client to use analgesics as ordered
- Encourage client to avoid sudden movements
- Do not position client on operative side

Knowledge Deficient: Perioperative care r/t no previous experience TNI’s
A
- Activity:
- Do not blow nose or cough to sneeze with mouth open to prevent fluctuation of air pressure in the middle ear
- Avoid drinking through a straw for 2-3 weeks
- No air travel until allowed by surgeon
- Use measures to prevent constipation such as adequate fluid and fiber
- Do not shampoo hair or shower until allowed by surgeon
- Do not swim or dive until allowed by surgeon
- Signs and Symptoms to Report:
- Chills or fever greater than 100F or 38C
- Worsening ear pain or discomfort
- Unusual bleeding or drainage from operative site
- Nausea or vomiting
- Lack of appetite
- Persistent postoperative headache
- Decreased Hearing
- Dizziness

May be used to insert an ossicular prosthesis and a tympanic membrane graft in patients with chronic otitis media
