What happens during a barium enema or lower GI series
A
Fluoroscopic x-ray examination of the colon that uses contrast medium which is administered rectally; air is infused after barium is evacuated

Pre Procedure
A
- NPO 8 hours
- Laxatives and enemas until the colon is clear of stool
- Clear liquid diet the evening prior to exam
- Explain the procedure
- Explain that cramping and the urge to defecate may occur during the procedure
- Explain that the patient may be placed in different positions on a tilt table

Post Procedure
A
- Administer fluids, laxatives, or suppositories to aid in expelling the barium contrast
- monitor stool for passage of the barium (white colored stool)
