A

Fluoroscopic x-ray examination of the colon that uses contrast medium which is administered rectally; air is infused after barium is evacuated

Pre Procedure

A
  1. NPO 8 hours
  2. Laxatives and enemas until the colon is clear of stool
  3. Clear liquid diet the evening prior to exam
  4. Explain the procedure
  5. Explain that cramping and the urge to defecate may occur during the procedure
  6. Explain that the patient may be placed in different positions on a tilt table

Post Procedure

A
  1. Administer fluids, laxatives, or suppositories to aid in expelling the barium contrast
  2. monitor stool for passage of the barium (white colored stool)
