A
Action:
Inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria cell causing bacterial death
Side/Adverse Effects:
- Ototoxicity
- Nephrotoxicity
Nursing Implications:
- Instruct patient to report signs of:
- Hypersensitivity
- Tinnitus
- Vertigo
- Hearing Loss
- Rash
- Dizziness
- Difficulting urinating

Polyethylene glycol/electolyte (GoLYTELY)
A
Action:
Polethyleneglycol (PEG) in solution acts as an osmotic agent, drawing water into the lumen of the GI tract
Side/Adverse Effects:
- Abdominal Fullness
- Diarrhea
- Bloating
- Cramps
- N/V
Nursing Implications:
- Assess patient for abdominal distention, presence of bowel sounds and usual bowel function
- Assess color, consistency, and amount of stool produced
- Monitor semi-conscious or unconscious patients closely for regurgitation when administering VIA NG tube
- Instruct patient to take medication exactly as prescribed, consuming the entire gallon of solution otherwise the GI examiniation may need to be repeated
- Instruct adults and teenagers to drink one full 8oz glass rapidly every 10-15 minutes until gallon of golytely is finished. In children the amount of solution is taken based on body weight and must be determined by MD
- Teach patient that sipping slowly will finish the effectiveness of the medication
