Neomycin sulfate (mycifradin)

A

Action:

Inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria cell causing bacterial death

Side/Adverse Effects:

  1. Ototoxicity
  2. Nephrotoxicity

Nursing Implications:

  • Instruct patient to report signs of:
    • Hypersensitivity
    • Tinnitus
    • Vertigo
    • Hearing Loss
    • Rash
    • Dizziness
    • Difficulting urinating

Polyethylene glycol/electolyte (GoLYTELY)

A

Action:

Polethyleneglycol (PEG) in solution acts as an osmotic agent, drawing water into the lumen of the GI tract

Side/Adverse Effects:

  • Abdominal Fullness
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Cramps
  • N/V

Nursing Implications:

  1. Assess patient for abdominal distention, presence of bowel sounds and usual bowel function
  2. Assess color, consistency, and amount of stool produced
  3. Monitor semi-conscious or unconscious patients closely for regurgitation when administering VIA NG tube
  4. Instruct patient to take medication exactly as prescribed, consuming the entire gallon of solution otherwise the GI examiniation may need to be repeated
  5. Instruct adults and teenagers to drink one full 8oz glass rapidly every 10-15 minutes until gallon of golytely is finished. In children the amount of solution is taken based on body weight and must be determined by MD
  6. Teach patient that sipping slowly will finish the effectiveness of the medication
