Types of Experiments Flashcards
lab experiment definition
experiment conducted in a very controlled environment where the independent variable is manipulated by experimenter
Strengths of lab
very controlled -> reducing extraneous variables, increase internal validity
+ replicability -> enhances validity
Weakness of a lab
contreives situation -> participants may not behave naturally, low ecological validity
factors affecting procedure -> researcher bias & demand characteristics
Definition of field experiment
experiment conducted in natural real-life settings where IV is manipulated by researcher
Strengths of field
less contrived -> high ecological validity
Avoids demand characteristics -> unaware they are being watched
Weakness of field
Less control -> extraneous variables can’t be reduced fully
Time consuming -> setting up study, can also be expensive
Ethical -> no consent
