Procedure
Familiarise with 4 manifestos (data corpus)
Decide on initial categories and refine them
Tally up mentions of ‘mental’ regarding attitudes, viewpoints, positions and policies on mh using behavioural categories
Anallyse using %s and wuote (pie charts to compare visuals)
Ethical considerations
Don’t need consent etc
Manifestos in public domain so can be used
Quantitative analysis inter-rate reliability
Moderate to high
Liberal democrats mentioned mh a lot and is very dense (packs a lot of information into a small space)
BUT
People can tally up points differently, each sentence could be counted as three tallies per point or per sentence (varies between what each researcher chose to do)
Green party left many special interest groups in one sentence, could be tallied individually or together
3 conclusions from our quantitative analysis
1) times mentioned
2) accessability
3) mentioned mh reforming
1) Right wing (conservatives) mentioned mental health 10 times, left mentioned mh 21 times
2) Right mentioned mh in the context of accessability proportionally more than left wing parties by 30% vs 20.7%
3) Right wing conservatives mentioned reforming mh proportionally less than the left wing parties: 0% vs 25.7%
Qualitative findings similarity between parties
Both suggest increasing funding for young people and children
Conservatives - “increase proportion of mh care… including children and young people”
Labour - “increase the proportion of mh budget spent on children
Showing they both have similar intentions for MH funding in children
Qualitative findings difference between left and right parties
How they refer to reforming MH services
Labour - “the current system is too fragmented
Conservatives - do not mention reforming system, only increasing funding
Left leaning place central focus on changing methods of NHS for MH compared to right leaning
