Sampling Flashcards
What is a random sample
Every member of target pop has equal chance of being selected
Strengths of random sample
unbiased
can choose subgroup
Weakness of random sample
Time and effort (need list of target pop)
Samples often not random (finding sample, volunteering)
What is stratified sample
Participants selected in proportion to sub groups frequency in target pop
Strengths of stratified
most Representative (unless people withdraw)
Important subgroups selected (increased control over extraneous variables
Weakness of stratified
Biased (researcher decides subgroups)
Lengthy process
Volunteer sample what it is
ask people willing to take part (advert)
Strengths of volunteer sample
convenient (less likely to withdraw)
purposive sampling (good way to get specialised sample)
Weakness of volunteer
biased (volunteers highly motivated)
Demand characteristics
Opportunity sample what it is
select people most readily available
Strengths of opportunity sample
most convenient (quick)
May be only technique possible (sometimes target pop cant be listed)
Weakness of opprtunity sample
Biased (have to be there at the time)
Pps can refuse to take part (volunteer)
