What are the four Ds help determine?

Deviance
Unusual, undesirable, and bizarre behaviours
How are you to conform to statistical and social norms
Dysfunction
Symptoms that distract confuse or interfere with ability to carry out responsibilities
WHODAS II questionnaire - find a persons understanding of what’s going on around them, communication and deterioration and self-care
Distress
Symptoms cause, emotional pain, anxiety
Sometimes physical, aches and pains, tiredness
Can be normal in certain situations
Quantitated data collected using Kesssler psychological distress scale (k10), self-report in past four weeks
Danger
Callous, hostile or hazardous behaviour, jeopardising safety of the person and or others
Can be detained under mental health act of professionals agree, they’re in danger or dangering in others

Concerned with abnormal behaviour seeks to define makes behaviour abnormal than diagnose so problem can be treated
Strength
Using all 4Ds helps avoid erroneous diagnosis
More factors considered than just deviance from statistical or social norms
Avoid eccentric, Bahamas people being labelled, mentally ill

Some may not require diagnosis

Lacks objectivity - is various methods increase objectivity than likely

Creates labels - can lead to person with mental disorder being seen as dangerous i.e. Schizophrenics.

4ds effectively applied to diagnosis of mental disorders
