- Descends down to umbilical region
- End at left colic flexure in left hypochondrial region

18-20 inches long
Peritoneal covering
Completely covered by peritoneum and has mesentery (transverse mesocolon)
Transverse mesocolon
Peritoneal fold formed of 2 layers and found behind ascending posterior 2 layers of greater omentum
Tranverse mesocolon: borders
- Free border
- Attached border
Free border
Contains transverse colon (transverse colon 1st part 2 inches are bare of peritoneum and lie directly on duodenum 2nd part)
Attached border (root)
Attached to posterior abdominal wall along following structures from right to left:
1. Anterior surface of pancreas head
2. Anterior border of pancreas body
Transverse mesocolon: contents
- Transverse colon in free border (except 1st 2 inches)
- Branches of middle colic artery
- Ascending branch of superior left colic artery
- Lymph vessels and nodes
- Sympathetic plexuses
- Extraperitoneal fat
Relations: anterior
- Inferior surface of liver right lobe
- Gall bladder body and fundus
- Stomach greater curvature
- Greater omentum
Relations: posterior
- Duodenum 2nd part
- Pancreas head
- Duodenojejunal flexure and jejunum coils
- Left kidney
Arterial supply
Right 1/3: ascending branch of right colic artery (branch of superior mesenteric artery)
Middle 1/3: middle colic artery artery ( branch of superior mesenteric artery)
Left 1/3: ascending branch of superior left colic artery (branch of inferior mesenteric artery)
Venous drainage
Into superior and inferior mesenteric veins
