- External hernia
- Internal hernia
External hernia
Appears on surface as:
1. Inguinal
2. Femoral
3. Umbilical
4. Incisional
Internal hernia
- Does not appear on surface
- Diaphragmatic hernia
Etiology
- Congenital sac
- Abdominal wall weakness
- Increased intra-abdominal pressure
Congenital sac
Continental oblique Inguinal hernia due to persistent Patency of processus vaginalis
Abdominal wall weakness
Due to:
1. Obesity
2. Pregnancy
3. Weak scar or nerve supply injury to muscles during operation
Increased intra-abdominal pressure
Due to:
Chronic straining:
1. Cough
2. Constipation
3. Deliveries
Or
Abdominal swelling:
1. Repeated pregnancies
2. Hepatosplenomegaly
3. Ascites
Structure defect
Through which sac bulges out as internal Inguinal ring
Sac
- Peritoneal pouch protruding through defect and contains protruded organ
- Consists of fundus, body, and neck
Content
Any mobile abdominal viscera as intestine and omentum
