Anterior Abdominal Wall Veins Flashcards
Above umbilicus
- Superior epigastric vein
- Lateral thoracic vein
Above umbilicus
- Superior epigastric vein
- Lateral thoracic vein
Below umbilicus
- Inferior epigastric vein
- Superficial epigastric vein
- Superficial circumflex vein
Superior epigastric vein
Runs in rectus sheath deep to rectus muscle ending in internal thoracic vein (innominate vein tributary)
Lateral thoracic vein
Runs in superficial fascia on lateral side of abdomen and thorax ending in Axillary vein
Inferior epigastric vein
Runs in rectus sheath deep to rectus muscle ending in external iliac vein
Superficial epigastric and superficial circumflex iliac veins
Run in superficial fascia of abdomen lower part ending in long Saphenous vein (femoral vein tributary)
Venous anastomosis in anterior abdominal wall
- Anastomosis between superior and inferior epigastric veins
- Anastomosis between lateral thoracic and superficial epigastric veins
- Anastomosis between anterior abdominal wall systemic veins (tributaries of SVC and IVC) and paraumbilical veins (portal vein tributaries)
Anastomosis between superior and inferior epigastric veins
In rectus sheath connecting SVC and IVC
Anastomosis between lateral thoracic and superficial epigastric veins
Forms thoraco-epigastric vein which connects SVC and IVC
Applied anatomy
Opening of portosystemic anastomosis in portal hypertension results in caput medusae
