Large Intestine Flashcards
Large intestine
GIT distal part
Size
150-180 cm (5 feet long)
Formation
- Caecum
- Appendix
- Ascending colon
- Transverse colon
- Descending colon
- Pelvic (sigmoid) colon
- Rectum
- Anal canal
Differs from small intestine in 3 features
- Taeniae coli
- Sacculations (haustrations)
- Appendices epiploicae
Taeniae coli
- 2 longitudinal muscle bands
- Start at: vermiform appendix base
- End in: sigmoid colon terminal part to be continuous with rectum longitudinal muscle layer
Taeniae coli size
Their length is 1 foot shorter than that of large intestine
Taeniae coli site in ascending and descending colons
Anterior, Posteromedial, and posterolateral
Taeniae coli site in transverse colon
1 posterior and 2 anterior (superior and inferior)
Sacculations
Colon wall bulges outwards in between Taeniae coli forming pouches (Sacculations) because Taeniae coli are shorter than colon length
Sacculations site
Absent in:
1. Appendix
2. Rectum
3. Anal canal
Appendices epiploicae
Small peritoneal projections filled with fat on large intestine surface
Appendices epiploicae site
Absent in:
1. Appendix
2. Caecum
3. Rectum
4. Anal canal
