Splenic Artery Flashcards
1
Q
Splenic artery
A
- Largest branch of coeliac trunk
- Characterized by having a wavy (tortuous) course to protect friable spleen from forceful blood flow
- Allow spleen movement and volumetric changes
2
Q
Course and relations
A
- Runs to left posterior to stomach (separated from it by lesser sac) along pancreas upper border
- It crosses in front of diaphragm left crus, left Suprarenal gland, and left kidney
- Enters lienorenal ligament reaching spleen
- Near spleen hilum, it divides into terminal splenic branches
3
Q
Branches
A
- Pancreatic
- Short gastric
- Left gastroepiploic
- Posterior gastric
- Terminal splenic
4
Q
Pancreatic
A
- Largest
- Called arteria pancreatica magna
- Supply pancreas body and tail
5
Q
Short gastric
A
- About 5 branches
- Arise from splenic artery terminal part and pass in Gastrosplenic ligament
- Supply stomach fundus
6
Q
Left gastroepiploic site
A
- Arise from splenic artery terminal part
- Runs downwards and to right between greater omentum anterior 2 layers along stomach greater curvature
7
Q
Left gastroepiploic supply
A
- Stomach
- Greater omentum
End by anastomosing with right gastroepiploic artery
8
Q
Posterior gastric
A
- Present in 50% of people arising from splenic artery intermediate part
- Ascends behinds lesser sac up to fundus then depends on stomach posterior wall
9
Q
Terminal splenic
A
- About 5 segmental end arteries
- Enter spleen hilum
10
Q
Applied anatomy
A
- Spleen is segmentally supplied by splenic artery branches
- Partial splenectomy is carried out according to this fact
