Kidney: Relations Flashcards
Posterior
- The same for both kidneys
- Each related to 4 posterior abdominal wall muscles and 4 neurovascular structures in between:
- Diaphragm (medial and lateral arcuate ligaments)
- Psoas major
- Transversus abdominis
- Quadratus lumborum
Diaphragm
Behind kidney upper part separating it from pleura costodiaphragmatic recess and 11th and 12th ribs (on left side) or 12th rib only (on right side)
Psoas major
Related to vertical area close to kidney medial border
Transversus abdominis
Related to vertical area close to kidney lateral border
Quadratus lumborum
Related to intermediate vertical area between Psoas major and transversus abdominis
4 neurovascular structures intervene between kidney and latter 2 muscles (TA and QL)
- Subcostal vessels
- Subcostal nerve
- Iliohypogastric nerve
- Ilioinguinal nerve
Anterior and peritoneal relations
Right and left kidney
Right kidney: right Suprarenal gland
Related to upper medial part
Left kidney: left suprarenal gland
Related to upper medial part just above Hilum
Right kidney: duodenum 2nd part
Related to area close to Hilum
Right kidney: liver right lobe
Related to upper lateral part
Right kidney: loops of jejunum
Related to lower medial part
Right kidney: right colic flexure
Related to lower lateral part
Right kidney: ascending branch of right colic artery
Ascends in front of kidney lower end to reach right colic flexure
Right kidney: peritoneal relations
- Anterior surface covered by peritoneum at hepatic and Jejunal areas
- Areas for right Suprarenal, duodenum, and right colic flexure are not covered by peritoneum, these viscera lie in direct contact with kidney
