Thoracolumbar fascia

A
  1. Extends high up to neck back and below sacrum binding back muscles to vertebral column sides
  2. In lumbar region, it is well formed, thickened (sometimes called lumbar fascia)
  3. Composed of 3 layers: anterior, middle, and posterior

Anterior layer

A
  1. Covers quadratus lumborum anterior surface
  2. Thickened above as lateral arcuate ligament

Middle layer

A
  1. Covers quadratus lumborum posterior surface
  2. Fuses with anterior layer at muscle lateral margin
  3. Medial, it reaches back of lumbar vertebrae tranverse processes
  4. Separates quadratus lumborum from sacrospinalis

A
  1. Covers sacrospinalis back
  2. Medial, it gains attachment to vertebrae spines
  3. Lateral, it fuses with back of lumbar fascia middle layer
