Beginning
At 12th thoracic vertebra lower border of as continuation of descending thoracic aorta
Course
Passes through aortic opening of diaphragm and descends in front of upper 4 lumbar vertebrae bodies with slight inclination to left
End
At 4th lumbar vertebra lower border, where it bifurcates into 2 common iliac arteries
Surface anatomy
Line drawn from point in median plane 2cm above transyloric plane to point 2 cm below and to left of umbilicus

- Superior mesenteric artery
- Inferior mesenteric artery
- Median sacral artery
Coeliac trunk
Arises opposite 12th thoracic vertebra lower border or 1st lumbar vertebra upper border
Superior mesenteric artery
Arises opposite 1st lumbar vertebra lower border
Inferior mesenteric artery
Arises opposite 3rd lumbar vertebra
Median sacral artery
Arises from back of aorta lower end at 4th lumbar vertebra level and descends to pelvis
