Colon Supply Flashcards
Arterial supply
Branches of superior and inferior mesenteric artery
Branches of superior mesenteric artery
To colon part derived from midgut
1. Ileocolic
2. Right colic
3. Middle colic
Branches of inferior mesenteric artery
To colon part derived from hindgut
1. Superior left colic artery
2. Inferior left colic (sigmoid)
Marginal artery of Drummond
- Connects all mentioned arteries as it lies in colon concavity forming important collateral channel between superior and inferior mesenteric arteries
- It gives straight branches (vasa recta) passing directly to colon
- It has great surgical importance as it can maintain viability of colon long segment after division of a major colic branch, this allows colon bypass to be feasible
Lymphatic drainage
Lymph vessels from colon follow arterial supply to drain into:
1. Epipcoloc nodes on bowel wall
2. Paracolic nodes between marginal artery and bowel
3. Intermediate nodes along colic arteries
4. Central nodes alongside superior and inferior mesenteric vessels
Nerve supply
- Parasympathetic
- Sympathetic
Parasympathetic
Vagus nerve:
1. Caecum
2. Ascending colon
3. Transverse colon right 2/3
Nervi erigente (pelvic splanchnic nerve)
1. Originate from S2,3, and 4
2. Motor to bowel wall and inhibitory to sphincters
3. Supplies distal colon and rectum
Sympathetic
Distributes to large intestine blood vessels via greater and lesser splanchnic nerves
