Abdominal Cavity Flashcards
Abdominal cavity
- Abdomen is trunk part below thorax
- Its shape and size vary with distension degree of abdominal organs, respiration phases, abdominal muscles tone, and body positions
Abdominal cavity divided into 2 parts:
- Abdomen proper cavity:
Bounded:
- superior by diaphragm
- inferior by lesser pelvis inlet - Lesser (true) pelvis cavity:
- below lesser pelvis inlet
Abdominal planes
- Transpyloric plane
- Subcostal plane
- Intertubecular plane
- Right and left lateral planes
Transpyloric plane
- Horizontal plane:
-midway between suprasteral notch and symphysis pubis
or
-midway between xiphisternal junction and umbilicus or hand’s breadth below xiphisternal junction - Lies opposite 1st lumbar vertebra posterior and 9th costal cartilages tips anterior
Transpyloric plane passes through which structures
- Pylorus
- Duodenum beginning
- Gall bladder fundus
- Kidney hilum
- Upper border of pancreas neck and body
- Superior mesenteric artery origin
- Epiploic foramen
Structures at 9th costal cartilages tip: - Linear semilunaris upper end
- Spinal cord lower end
- L1 vertebra body
Subcostal plane
Horizontal plane passing at costal margin lower border anterior and 3rd lumbar vertebra posterior
Subcostal plane passes through which structures
- Duodenum 3rd part
- Inferior mesenteric artery origin
Intertubercular plane
- Horizontal plane extending between iliac crests tubercles (5cm behind ASIS)
- Lies opposite 5th lumbar vertebra upper border posterior
Intertubercular plane passes through which structures
- IVC beginning
- Junction between caecum and ascending colon
Right and left lateral planes
Each crosses midclavicular point and midinguinal point (midway between ASIS and symphysis pubis) on each side
Abdomen proper is divided for description into 9 regions by:
2 horizontal planes
1. Subcostal plane
2. Intertubercular plane
2 vertical planes
3. Right and left lateral vertical planes
4. Right hypochondrium
5. Left hypochondrium
6. Right lumbar
7. Left lumbar
8. Right iliac
9. Left iliac
10. Umbilical
11. Epigastrium
12. Hypogastrium (suprapubic)
Abdomen proper is divided into 4 quadrants by 2 planes:
- Horizontal transumbilical plane: at disc between L3 and L4 vertebra
- Vertical median plane:
- right and left upper quadrants
- right and left lower quadrants
Epigastric region content (10)
- Greater part (or all) of liver left lobe
- Gall bladder
- Part of stomach
- Duodeno-jejunal flexure
- Spleen upper end
- Part of liver right lobe
- Stomach orifices (cardiac and pyloric)
- Duodenum 1st and 2nd parts
- Pancreas
- Suprarenal glands and parts of kidneys
Right hypochondrium content
- Greater part of liver right lobe
- Part of right kidney
- Colon right (hepatic) flexure
Left hypochondrium
- Part of stomach
- Colon left (splenic) flexure
- Sometimes small part of liver left lobe
- Greater part of spleen and pancreas tail
- Part of left kidney
