The origins and birth of neurons 3 Flashcards
What does SHH bind to?
Ptch
Effect of SHH binding to Ptch?
Stops Ptch inhibition of Smo
What happens when Smo is not inhibited?
Gli protein isnt processed, and so remains full length
What does the Gli protein do if it is full length?
Enters the nucleus and activates target genes
Where does neural proliferation occur?
Ventricular zone of proliferation
Where is the Ventricular zone of proliferation?
Next to the hollow in the neural tube
What happens over a lifetime to neural proliferation?
It decreases–> by adulthood v few neural cells are proliferating bc v few neural precursor cells remain
Neural stem cells properties?
self-renewing: divide to regenerate more stem cells.
Multipotent- exposure to different signals can stimulate differentiation into multiple cell types.
How do you get neural stem cells in the adult brain?
Isolate the structures that can make neurospheres
Role of neurogenic signals?
Pushing a neural stem cell to become neurons, and inhibit glial differentiation
Role of gliogenic signals?
Push a neural stem cell to become glial, and inhibit neuron differentiation
How do the cells differentiate if the environment is primarily neurogenic?
Into neurons
