Lab 8: Pelvic Region Flashcards
what envelops the rectus abdominis muscle?
the rectus sheath
what forms the external lamina?
the fused aponeuroses of the external and internal abdominal oblique muscles
what is the rectus sheath made up of?
the external lamina and the internal lamina
what forms the internal lamina?
the aponeurosis of the transversus abdominis muscle and a layer of fascia
what fibrous structure is located at the midline?
the linea alba
what can be palpated in the live animal that is loated between the skin and the external oblique dorsal to the stifle?
the subiliac (pre-femoral) lymph nodes
what is the pubovesical pouch?
the space between the pubic bone and the bladder
what is the vesicogenital pouch?
the space between the uterus (or ductus deferens) and the bladder
what is the rectogenital pouch?
the space between the rectum and the uterus (or prostate)
what is the broad ligament made up of?
the combined mesenteries of the uterus (mesometrium), ovaries (mesovarium) and uterine tubes (mesosalpinx)
describe the anatomical location of the ovaries in the horse
it is suspended from the sublumbar wall by the mesovarium
what does the proper ligament of the ovary connect?
the ovary to the uterine horn
what does the mesosalpinx connect? what does it form?
it suspends the coiled uterine tube
and forms the mesovarium and a pocket called the ovarian bursa (opens ventrally)
what is a peculiarity of the horse ovary?
the ovulation fossa - an area of ovulation on the concave surface
what are the parts of the uterus?
a long body
two horns
and a cervix
what vasculature runs in the mesovarium?
the ovarian artery
where does the ovarian artery originate from?
the aorta
what vasculature supplies the uterus?
the uterine artery
and more caudally, the vaginal artery coming from the internal pudendal artery
where does the uterine artery arise from? what is the significance of this?
the external iliac artery - this is unique to the horse
where does the vaginal artery arise from?
the internal pudendal artery
what is the thickened portion of the external abdominal oblique aponeurosis called?
the inguinal ligmaent
where does the inguinal ligament end?
amongst the fibers of the strong prepubic tendon
what does the external iliac artery give rise to?
the femoral and deep femoral arteries
where does the pudendoepigastric trunk arise from?
what does it pass over?
the deep femoral artery
it passes over the inguinal ligament
what does the external pudendal artery dive between?
the caudal edge of the internal abdominal oblique and the inguinal ligament
what is the opening between the caudal edge of the internal abdominal oblique and the inguinal ligament called?
the deep inguinal ring
what does the deep inguinal ring lead to?
the inguinal canal
what nerve enters the inguinal canal through the deep inguinal ring?
the genitofemoral nerve
in the mare, what nerve and vessel pass through the inguinal canal?
the genitofemoral nerve and external pudendal artery.
hat forms the superficial inguinal ring?
a slit in the aponeurosis of the external abdominal oblique
