Hormones & Purpose Flashcards
Cow & Bull - Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)
Controls release of LH & FSH from pituitary gland
Cow & Bull - Luteinizing hormone (LH)
COW - Causes follicle to rupture (ovulation) and the formation of corpus luteum to replace follicle, large increase 24 hours before ovulation, soon after the onset of estrus BULL- Stimulates sperm production
Cow & Bull - Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
COW - Stimulates growth of ovarian follicles
BULL - Stimulates sperm production
Cow - Estrogen (E2)
Causes estrus and peaks at one set of standing heat, involved in development of mammary gland
Cow - Progesterone (P4)
Necessary to maintain pregnancy, inhibits release of GnRH from hypothalamus, involved in development of mammary gland
Cow - Prostaglandin (PGF)
Restarts estrous cycle by destroying corpus luteum
Cow - Oxytocin
Cuases milk let-down, helps deliver the calf, stimulate muscular contractions of the uterus, which pushes calf out, responsible for involution of udder
Cow - Relaxin
Helps deliver the calf, causes tissue in the birth canal to relax so calf can be born
Cow - Prolactin
Critical to initiation and maintenance of lactation
Cow - Adrenaline
Can interfere with milk ejection when cow becomes frightened
Cow - Inhibin
Suppresses FSH
Bull - Testosterone
Responsible for male sex drive (libido)
