Exam 1 – Lecture 5: Dr. Langston Flashcards
What is negative feedback?
A reaction in which the system responds to reverse the direction of change, allowing the maintenance of homeostasis
What is the most important control method?
Negative feedback
Describe negative feedback.
It works likes a thermostat.
It starts at a normal range, goes beyond the normal range, and then returns to normal
What is an example of positive feedback?
Uterine contractions during birth
What is negative feedback regulation?
Movement toward set point
Describe negative feedback regulation.
Reverse direction of original stresssor
Continuous monitoring
Dynamic constancy- oscillations about the set point
What is positive feedback regulation?
Movement away from set point
Describe positive feedback regulation.
Amplify original stimulus
Less common
Does not provide fine tuning
Can be fatal
What kind of feedback is often in disease?
Positive
What is the frank-starling law of the heart?
The greater the volume of blood entering the heart, the greater the volume of blood ejected during contraction
What is adaptive control/feed-forward control?
Brain send impulses along the nerves to the muscles. When it first occurs, it will be jerky and not quite smooth. The feed-forward control will refine the movement
