Q

How long can an EDG be run unloaded before it will need to be run fully loaded? for how long? Why?

A

Can be run unlaoded 4.5 hr before needing >1hr fully loaded.
Fully loaded run needed to remove carbon buildup in exhaust line. Full load run produces exhaust gas hot enough to burn off the carbon deposits

Q

On an EDG Start Signal, what does the Air Start System to?

A

Air Start Solenoid ENERGIZES - energized by 125vdc;
Air routed through air start solenoid to pinion of 1st motor, then to 2nd motor
Air operates a diaphragm against spring pressure to open Air Start Relay;

25
What are the Pumps associated with the EDG Lube Oil System and their power sources?
Turbo Oil Pump : - dedicated flow to turbocharger for bearing lube and residual heat during shutdown - 28-3; 38-3; 29-4 Circ Oil Pump: Circs Oil through accessory racks to maintain oil level and provides pressurized oil to main crackshaft bearing and engine gallery: same as TOP Engine Driven Pumps: Scavenging Oil Pump : Suction to Main and Piston Oil Pumps Piston Pump: Supplies oil to cool and lube piston pin bearing and cylinders Main Oil Pump: Supplies oil to main bearing, gear train camshaft and rocker arm
26
How does the Main Oil Pump supply oil to the crack shaft?
A feeder tube supplies the crankshaft main bearings
27
Which Lube Oil systems are continuously running?
Turbo (Soak Back) and Circ Oil Systems: These two help to remove the latent heat from the components and provide pre-lube. Both take suction off engine oil sump. Powered by 28-3, 38-3, 29-4 (Opposite Division)
28
What local oil indications should exist when the engine is in standby and operating?
Standby: Upper bullseye should have no oil, lower bullseye should be full operating: Both should be full IMMEDIATELY after shutdown: both will be empty for ~10min
29
What is the capacity and required fill level for the EDG Main Fuel Oil Tanks?
15,000gal capacity; Requires 10,000gal or 7day LCO
30
How long is the fuel in the main fuel tank expected to be able to supply the EDG?
2 days at full load or 4 days at half-load | - MUST BE ABLE TO DELIVER REPLACEMENT FUEL W/IN 8 hr
31
What is the capacity of the EDG day tanks? Supply time for EDG? How does it get refilled?
700gal tank to supply 4hr run @ 100% load TS requires 245gal min to run 1 hr at 110% load Kept full using Fuel Oil Transfer Pump autocycle w/ level switch
32
How is the EDG emergency shutdown performed?
Fuel Rack Lever (preferred) | Emergency shutoff switch
33

34
What is the purpose of the Combustion and Exhaust Air systems for the EDG?
Diesel engine combustion air sysstem provide compressed air to teh engine cylinders in the quantity necessary to support diesel fuel combustion. Exhaust system ports away exhaust fumes INtake and exhaust from roof
35
What is the EDG Turbocharger purpose?
Converts thermal energy of exhaust gas into work by compressing intake air - provides the motive force to an ejector to maintain negative pressure in crankcase when EDG is running
36
When does the EDG Ventilation System Start? When does it shutoff
Auto Start when EDG reaches 800rpm | Must be manually secured
37
When in standby, what provides the U2 and U3 EDG room ventilation?
TB Vent (Not the engine room vent system)
38
Where does the EDG Room Vent take suction?
From the vent penthouse on the roof
39
What are the requried temperatures that ventilation is intended to maintain in the EDG rooms? Basis?
Max 140F - prevent damage to electrical components Min 45F - based on ability of EDG electric heater and Circ Oil system to maintain the engine warm and ready to fast start Jacket water does not have antifreeze, so this helps to keep above freezing
40
What operates the EDG Room Dampers?
Normal: IA | Backup : N2 air cylinders
41
Which components of EDG share common breaker?
Immersion heater and lube oil Circ Oil Pump

45
What sequence creates a lockout during autostart?
If engine fails to reach 200rpm w/in 15 second of start signal - failure to start occurs and engine is locked out
46
What are teh droop settings for the EDG and when are they enabled? Why?
5 during normal/emergency operation so that there is minimal frequency drop as ECCS systems are picked up 55 during tests lined up to the grid to prevent overloading the EDG
