Diseases CPA 11 Flashcards
Pseudomonas aeruginosa; bacteria; contact with wounded skin or deeper tissues following burns, inhalation, HAI from biofilm on endotracheal tubes; blue-green color where bacteria are growing, blood clots, can infect lungs; burn victims, cancer patients, immunocompromised patients, cystic fibrosis patients; does not invade intact tissue
Pseudomonas Infection
Trypanosoma brucei; protozoa; tsetse flies transmit, protozoa are in the salivary glands of the flies; due to the ability for the pathogen to create new glycoproteins, immunity is nearly impossible; stage 1 = wound created by tsetse fly bite becomes a lesion of necrotic tissue; stage 2 = parasites enter blood and generate fever, swelling of lymph nodes and headaches; stage 3 = invade CNS, meningoencephalitis
African Trypanosomiasis; aka african sleeping sickness
Ebolavirus; ssRNA virus; minor petechiae, progress to internal hemorrhaging, bleeding from body orifices, death results from shock, seizures, kidney failure; inhibits blood clotting; transmitted via bats; hosts can transmit via contact with bodily fluids; 90% mortality rate
Ebola - African Viral Hemorrhagic Fever
Hantavirus; ssRNA virus; inhalation of infected rodent excrement or saliva; sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle aches, abdominal pains, coughing, severe difficulty breathing; transmitted via rodents
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
Cryptosporidium parvum; protozoa; zoonosis; severe watery diarrhea several times a day for about 2 weeks; life-threatening malabsorption, hepatitis, and pancreatitis can cause complications; infected via consumption of oocyte contaminated water; direct oral-fecal transmission; common in daycares
Cryptosporidiosis
Trichomonas vaginalis; protozoa; enters via mucous membrane of genitalia; females = malodorous, yellow-green vaginal discharge, vaginal irritation, spot bleeding, dysuria; males = asymptomatic, urethritis, prostatitis; sexually transmitted; more common among heterosexual males, uncircumcised males at higher risk; for pregnant women, it can result in low birth weight and premature birth of baby; likes pH of 6+
Trichomoniasis
