Cells Flashcards
The cell membrane is made of
- Phospholipids
- Cholesterol
- Proteins
What is the structure of a Phospholipid?
- Phosphate Head
- Glycerol Backbone
- Fatty Acid Tails
Describe the Phosphate Head?
- Hydrophilic
- 4 oxygens attached to P group
Describe the Glycerol Backbone?
- Holds the fatty acid tails to the phosphate head
- 3 carbons attached to 3 hydroxyls
Describe Fatty Acid Tails?
- Hydrophobic
- Carboxylic acid attached to long carbon chain
Passive Diffusion through the cellular membrane is for
Small, nonpolar molecules
How many glycerols are found in each phospholipid?
1
What does cholesterol do in the cell membrane?
It sticks itself between phospholipids + maintains fluidity
What is the function of proteins in the cell membrane?
They act as receptors + help transport molecules in out of the cell
What are Integral / Trans proteins?
They cross the entire membrane
Fluidity of the cellular membrane can be influenced by
- Temperature
- Cholesterol
- Fatty Acids
What happens to the cellular membrane in low temperature?
It gets more rigid
What happens to the cellular membrane in high temperature?
It is more fluid due to greater distance between the phospohilipids
What happens to the cellular membrane with low cholesterol?
It increases the fluidity of the membrane
What happens to the cellular membrane with high cholesterol?
It decreases fluidity
