Would you work for free? Flashcards
Internship
These are extended period of work experience where someone can be working full time without an actual contract & in many cases without even being paid.
Did you do any work experience? I think I may have done a day or two @ some companies, just shadowing, watching how they did things, but nothing more than that.
This is a bit of a problem. Some companies are being accused of using students or graduates as cheap or free labour. Although the counter argument/intuitive is that internships are valuable experience for people who need it before they can get a real job.
This rules out a lot of people from the benefits of an internship.
Rules out
Simply means exclude.
If you can’t afford to work for free, it makes it very difficult to do an internship, particularly in expensive cities like London. This rules out a lot of people from the benefits of an internship.
This is bad for social mobility … .
I barely can afford to live here, so the idea of doing an unpaid internship would not appeal to me @ all.
Social mobility
Social mobility, which is the ability of people to move to higher, better paid levels of society.

Established connection
They have some pre existing link with the company/ industry, through family or friends’ family. Especially if they are well connected - contacts & links to important people in that company.
Too often internships are open to those with established connections in the professions & these well-connected families or friend can open a door to that opportunity.
Well connected
If your family is well connected, if it has lots of contacts & links to important people in that company.
Too often internships are open to those with established connections in the professions & these well connected families or friend can open a door to the opportunity.
To open doors
To open doors is an expression that means to get access to.
If your father plays golf with the CEO, it can open door.
Too often internships are open to those with established connections in the professions & these well connected families or friend can open a door.
A substantial proportion of those internships are unpaid.
Are you well-connected? No, only to my smartphone!
It makes it difficult for those students without resources/connections. It’s difficult for poorer candidates.
